New Digiturf and Raceclubs Sales Ring

NEW SALES RING – Yearlings

We, Digiturf and RaceClubs, need to clarify the issue of the changes made to the sales ring further as it appears that many players have misinterpreted our statements and are of the view that nothing has and will change.

We must emphasise that we have implemented a NEW sales ring which has been remodelled. It is NOT simply the old ring less a band of poor horses. In remodelling the Digiturf sales ring, we have also removed the clones and achieved a better spread for horses across all distances and goings. In removing the poorer Digiturf and RaceClubs horses, we have added a large number of new more competitive G1’s and G2’s. We have increased the number of good G1 (previously a Grade 1 A) horses by a multiple of 5. This will have a large positive impact on the G1 population. What we have NOT done is increase the lengths by which Digiturf horses beat the barrier horse, so the benchmarks will stay the same. If anything, this should reduce “the bar” as more stables will effectively have access to competitive horses and you may find that horses with lower lengths are ultimately more successful in larger fields of runners.

In clarifying this further we advise trainers to take a new approach when training their yearlings. Firstly we recommend training each horse over a sprint, stayer and middle distance before deciding whether to persevere with it or not. We have already noticed a couple of trainers retiring horses after only galloping over 1000 meters. A number of these were great horses over the staying distances. Secondly, we suggest that until these horses are raced do not retire them on the basis of your experience from the old ring. You may find that a number of these horses may be raceable under the new Digiturf and RaceClubsstructure and therefore worth keeping. After all they are not costing you anything to keep for the next month.

Those that are stuck in their ways and refusing to change their mindset are not going to benefit from the changes to the new (Yearlings) Sales Ring. We say this based on the good horses we are seeing being retired daily since the opening of the revised ring. We’ve seen some of Digiturf’s most experienced trainers retiring their best Yearlings. Baffling that they can make such a mistake. If they can do so, so can you. We urge all trainers to train their horses over at least 3 distances before making a decision to retire them. We see time and time again horses being retired that have barely been trained, and having been trained over the wrong distances and/or goings – not giving a horse a chance to show you its true worth. It’s ultimately your loss.

Digiturf – New Season Changes

Digiturf has issued a press release with some positive enhancements for next seasons racing.  Below is an outline of the changes.

Significant Enhancements Coming in New Digiturf and RaceClubs Season

In promoting the continued development of the Digiturf game and its growth into the future, we are happy to announce some unprecedented enhancements to the Digiturf game in the forthcoming season.

These changes follow extensive research and interaction with Digiturf members over the past couple of months in determining a list of game priorities. Undoubtedly the highlight of these enhancements are the changes we will be making to the Sales Ring which has been the most requested enhancement by members to date. We have listened and are happy to bring this to you.

We will be making a further announcement in mid July clarifying changes to the race program for the new Digiturf and RaceClubs season.

It must also be noted that the changes proposed to the current auction format so as to provide for more transparency will be included in the development schedule in the new season.

A summary of enhancements for the new season are summarised in the paragraphs below:

1. Enhanced Sales Ring

With effect from Wednesday 7 July 2010 from 7am GMT, together with the introduction of the Digiturf and RaceClubs Yearling Sales, we will be introducing certain changes to the horse population so as to improve the general quality of horses available for purchase. The following changes will be implemented in enhancing the Sales Ring:

a) We will remove a substantial chunk of the poor horses from each of the three grades.

b) The same number of horses removed from the database which are considered poor horses will be added back as improved horses in each of the grades. As such we are maintaining the 100,000 horse population but improving the chances of purchasing a better horse out of the Sales Ring.

c) We will be addressing the issue of ‘clones’ and ensuring a better distribution of good Digiturf horses across the various distances and goings in all grades. We must point out however that this change does not impact the length requirement for good horses overall and so what was considered a good horse in the past will remain the same in the revised population of horses.

With the changes being implemented to the Sales Ring we are confident that we will resolve many issues members have had with racing. As a result we anticipate a significant positive impact on field sizes across the board.

As stated, this change to the Sales Ring will be implemented at the opening of the Digiturf Yearling Sales, from which time all 1 year olds will come from the amended Sales Ring. All 2 and 3 year olds sold in the Sales Ring will continue to be from the old Sales Ring until the start of the new season.

2. Enhanced Rated Racing Structure

There were discussions recently to remove Digiturf Rated Racing from the game due to its alleged negative impact on Graded Races. We have since then engaged in extensive debates with affected members and have come to the conclusion that there is a large population of members who enjoy racing in these races and there is therefore convincing merit to retain this racing format.

In rationalising the Sales Ring and removing a large number of the poorer horses, we have narrowed the Grades to a point where the Class division is no longer practical or even possible. With effect from the new season it is necessary to reduce the number of Rated Racing levels, from 4, to 3 and in so doing bring these levels in line with the 3 grades. Horses will then be rated according to their grades, bringing the two systems in sync and therefore deploying one uniform grading system in the game.

Digiturf horses will no longer have a Class in Rated Racing, but only a Grade and a Rating. Races will be renamed accordingly. From next season these will be named as follows:

• Rated 1 (for Grade 1 horses)
• Rated 2 (for Grade 2 horses)
• Rated 3 (for Grade 3 horses)

Please note that yearling horses will not be rated until 1 August. Older horses will be re-rated according to their grades on 1 August 2010.

If you have a Grade 1 Class B horse at midnight GMT on 31 July 2010, it will be re-rated to 108, ie. at the bottom of Grade 1. If you have a Grade 2 Class C horse at midnight GMT on 31 July 2010, it will be re-rated to 85 at the bottom of Grade 2. All other horses will be rated at the Start rating of each grade, consistent with the current Rating rules.

3. Introduction of 34 Jockeys to Digiturf G1 racing

Following a season where G1 races attracted poor fields we have decided to re-introduce the full 34 jockeys to all G1 races. One exception will be Qualifying and Championship races which will remain with the current 17 jockey allocation.

We analysed prior Digiturf seasons G1 racing where the 34 jockeys were in place. We found a much more extensive spread of members entering these races resulting in larger fields and a much healthier G1 environment for all stables. We attribute this to a large degree to the perception by members that they have a chance to do better in these races. This does not mean that the top horses will not continue to excel but at least they will do so with a much larger population of horses to race against. We have to facilitate larger fields to ensure maximum enjoyment of racing by all members racing in the G1 races.

4. Returning Daily Training To 3/day at Digiturf

There is general consensus among members that the introduction of 6 training gallops last season took some degree of skill out of the game. It is generally perceived that this allowed ‘Monsters’ to make more frequent appearances in G1 races making it more difficult to compete. To further support improvements to the Sales Ring from 1 August, we will be reducing the training gallop allowance from the current 6 to 3. An exception to this is when training a new horse for the first time where members will continue to have unlimited training gallops until their horse attains a 90% fitness level. Members have asked that another exception be applied in the case where a horse is purchased off auction or in a claiming race. We will consider this development further in the new season.

We would like to encourage members to adopt the above Digiturf enhancements positively. As always we are here to listen to you and work hard in improving the game for all players. Enjoy the changes and get your horses ready for a feast of racing in the new season!

Digiturf Training Times – TT’s

One of the most important aspects of becoming a successful Digiturf stable or RaceClubs stable owner is knowing how your horses stack up against the competition.  Just like in real horse racing, trainers and owners dissect their horses workouts in order to judge the speed and talent of their horses.

At Digiturf, your workouts are of massive importance.  Not only is this how you train your horse up to peak performance level (97% – 100% fitness), but this is where you get to trial your horse against the Digiturf and RaceClubs barrier horse.

So what’s the Digiturf barrier horse?  The Digiturf and RaceClubs barrier horse is your training partner.  But, it’s also your competitions training partner.  Say what?

The barrier horse allows Digiturf and RaceClubs trainers to get a baseline comparison of how their horse is performing.  Over the seasons, veteran trainers have been compiling Training Time (TT) charts.  They’ve spent months or years learning the nuances of the the TT’s at Digiturf and RaceClubs, and thus know exactly which races their horse will be competitive in.

Luckily for you, I’m going to share the charts some of the charts here…

Grade 1 Horses (G1A 143) – 2-Year Old

Below is the chart for Championship and Consolation caliber 2-year old Digiturf and RaceClubs horses.  If you find yourself with a G1A horse doing these times, you’ve just made yourself some serious money!

Below is the chart for the G1A Added Money and $5 nomination races.  At Digiturf and RaceClubs, you’ll still make a good profit with these horses.  However, I would suggest staying out of WFA (Weight For Age) or Level Weight races unless you’re on the higher end of this scale.

Grade 2 Horses (G2B 128) & Grade 3 Horses (G3D 103)

A step below in class is the Grade 2 and Grade 3 horses.  Surprisingly, you can make a lot of money running G2B horses at Digiturf and RaceClubs.  These horses are great for newcomers.  They give you the chance to learn the game for cheap before moving up to the G1A ranks.Training Times, TT's for G2B and G3D virtual horses at Digiturf and Raceclubs

So now you should have an idea of what it takes to be competitive at each level.  Remember, your horses don’t have to be exactly at these numbers.  However, if they’re at or over, you have a better shot of winning more races.
But, just like in the world of live racing, anything can happen when your virtual horse enters the digital starting gate!

I Have a G1B and a G2C Virtual Horse, Now What?

For those of you that have hit the sales ring at Digiturf, you’ll notice that along with your monster G1A horses, you’ve inevitably received some G1B (now known as G1A 123′s) and G2C virtual horses.

Whereas the G1A horses are your Secretariat’s and Cigar’s, your G1B and G2C horses are your Green Monkey’s.  So the question that’s always asked is:

What the heck do I do with G1B (G1A 123) or G2C horses?!

Fear not new stable owner, there are a lot of things that you can do with these horses!

The first step that should always be taken is to look at the Training Times (TT’s) of your horses.  These can give you a good feel of what distances and surfaces they like the best.  They can also tell you how good of a G1B or G2C horse they really are.

Here’s a good basis for you to compare your 2 year-old G1B 128′s and G2C 113′s to:

If they aren’t around or above these numbers for their distances (while fully equipped), then likely they are not going to be able to handle their respective ranks.  If they’re not competitive, then the easiest and cheapest choice is to retire the horse and hit the sales ring again!

If your horse will be competitive and you want to run them, you have a choice of running them in Claiming Races or Rated Races.  You should always stay clear of the Graded Races with these horse types, as you’ll be running against the G1A143′s or G2B128′s.

Training Your Virtual Horse

Digital horse racing is becoming extremely popular amongst the horse racing contingent.  Part of the reason is that you get to own, train, and race your own horses… winning cash in the process!

This article will concentrate on the training aspect of virtual stable ownership.  Training your horse on the digital race track is slightly different than training your horse on the live race track.

Distance
At Digiturf, the website where you race your virtual horses, you can train your horses at the following distances:

1000m, 1200m, 1400m, 1600m, 1800m, 2200m, 2400m, 2850m, 3200m

NOTE:  Theses are also the race distances.

For each distance, there are 6 different “Going’s”, or track conditions:

Dirt Fast, Dirt Muddy, Turf Firm, Turf Good, Turf Soft, Turf Yielding

Each trainer is allowed to train their horse up to 6 times a day.  Each time you train your horse, it adds to his fitness level.  You want your horse around 97%-100% when racing.  Each horse starts off at 50% fitness level, and through the training process gains 2%-5% for each run.

It’s been noted that you earn 2%-3% when running sprint distances (1000 – 1400m), 2%-4% when running classic distances (1600m –  2200m), and 2%-5% when running stayer distances (2400m – 3200m).  This is extremely important at Digiturf because most of the time your horse will land on the 95% – 97% fitness level, and you don’t want to over-train your horse… or they’ll go back down to 50%!

So what does the training setup look like?

Here we’re training a horse named “Lookin’ Lucky” (no relation to the Derby contender Lookin’ At Lucky).  We can see that he’s a G3 (Grade 3) 2 year old male horse.  Right now he’s at 90% fitness.

We can train our horses on specific horse tracks.  Available for us to train and race on are the following:

All Tracks
All Dirt Tracks
- Dubai
- Canada
- America

All Turf Tracks
- Hong Kong
- Australia
- England

We can also choose the distance and the “Going” of the surface.  Lastly, we can pick how many training runs for our horse.

Training your horse at Digiturf is extremely important.  Via the training of your horses, you learn all their preferences.  Some horses like to run on dirt tracks, but only when they’re muddy.  Some horses like to run at 1200m but struggle at 2200m.  All of these variables are evident through the training process of your horses.

If you’re worried about not having enough time to check on your horses at Digiturf to make sure they’re trained, you can set an “Auto-Trainer” option.  This allows you to choose certain distance, going, and track preferences for your horses.  It will then automatically train them until they reach a certain fitness level (between 70% and 95%, you choose).

During your training session, your horse races against a “Barrier Horse”.  This is a standard virtual horse that all Digiturf horses train against.  When a horse complete a training session, you receive a “TT” or a training time.  This “TT” shows how many lengths you beat or lost to the “Barrier Horse”, by which you can gauge how talented your horse truly is.

NOTE:  We’ll discuss the different “TT” standards in a later post.
