Rachel Alexandra, the 2009 Horse of the Year, gave birth Sunday in Kentucky to a 125-pound colt by Curlin, the 2007 and 2008 Horse of the Year, according to a press release. It was Rachel Alexandra’s first foal.

Rachel Alexandra - Curlin Colt

The bay colt was born at 2:40 p.m. at Stonestreet Farm, near Lexington. He took his first steps 1 1/2 hours later. Stonestreet farm manager Gary Megibben said both mare and foal were doing well and that “Rachel is a natural mother, and took to the colt immediately.”

The colt is emblazoned with a white star and is said to resemble his mother.

“I am thrilled with the good news of Rachel’s safe delivery and health of the handsome colt that resembles her,” owner Barbara Banke said in the release. “For me and my children, this colt represents Jess’ dream – to raise and race the best. Co-owner Hal McCormick and I look forward to watching him develop and are excited to see him carry the Stonestreet silks as his Mom and Dad did before him.”

Jess Jackson and McCormick purchased Rachel Alexandra from owner-breeder Dolphus Morrison after her 20 1/4-length romp in the 2009 Kentucky Oaks. Jackson died in April 2011.

Rachel Alexandra, by Medaglia d’Oro and out of Lotta Kim, won five Grade 1 stakes in 2009 – the Kentucky Oaks, Preakness, Mother Goose, Haskell, and Woodward – on her way to a Horse of the Year title. Curlin won the 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic and 2008 Dubai World Cup.

Rachel Alexandra is scheduled to bred this year to Bernardini, who covered 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta last year. That foal is due some time in April.

Rachel Alexandra retired, scheduled to breed to Curlin

Rachel Alexandra retired.

Rachel Alexandra was retired today, ending her 2010 campaign with 2 wins out of 5 starts.  But what she’ll most be remembered for was her electrifying 2009 campaign, where she dominated the boys and invigorated the racing industry.  Rachel Alexandra eventually won the 2009 Horse of the Year honors over the undefeated mare Zenyatta.

Next up for Rachel Alexandra could be just as interesting, and provide the racing industry with just as much  entertainment.  Although a date hasn’t been set, she’s scheduled to breed with another Jess Jackson superstar, Curlin.  Curlin was the 2007 & 2008 Horse of the Year winner, which could potentially setup their offspring for some record breaking runs.

“As you know, despite top training and a patient campaign, Rachel Alexandra did not return to her 2009 form,” Jackson said in a news release. “I believe it’s time to retire our champion and reward her with a less stressful life. We are delighted that she will retire healthy and happy to our beautiful farm in Kentucky.”

Jackson said he would breed Rachel Alexandra to his two-time Horse of the Year Curlin next year.

Rachel Alexandra horse race Zenyatta Blame Quality Road in 2010 Breeders Cup Championship

Zenyatta, winner of the 2009 Breeders' Cup Championship

With the disappointing finishes this year by reigning Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, the year long battle between East and West just doesn’t seem as pertinent anymore.  Since the voting for 2009 Horse of the Year was released, which crowned Rachel Alexandra and her amazing 3-year old campaign, the horse racing world has been abuzz with arguments over which horse would win in an actual race.

We all thought we’d see the historic matchup with the release from Oaklawn Park that an additional $5 million would be added to the purse of the 2010 Apple Blossom if both Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra were to show up.  Zenyatta ended up winning the Apple Blossom, but after Rachel Alexandra lost her 2010 campaign opener in the New Orleans to Zardana, she skipped the race.

Rachel Alexandra hasn’t been able to pull it back together, and is now 2 wins in 5 tries thus far in 2010, including the recent upset loss in the Personal Ensign at Saratoga.  Zenyatta, however, has stretched her winning streak to 18 in a row, and continues towards her date with destiny, the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Championship at Churchill Downs, where she’ll try to finish off her career at a perfect 20 for 20, unprecedented winner of back to back Championships, and title of Horse of the Year.

But she’s sure to face an extremely tough and talented 2010 Breeders’ Cup Championship field, which could include Blame, Lookin’ At Lucky, Quality Road, Haynesfield, and a host of other top notch contenders!

So the questions that still remain are:

Who do you think would win now between Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta?

and

Who do you think Zenyatta will face in the 2010 Breeders Cup Championship?  And will she be the winner?

Rachel Alexandra easily handles all comers in the 2010 Lady’s Secret Stakes at Monmouth Park.  Unfortunately, Rachel Alexandra only attracted a crowd of approximately 12,500, whereas Monmouth officials had hoped for around 15,000.  However, much of the on track decline can be attributed to the heat wave that attacked the Jersey shore, descending heat index temperatures of over 100 degrees.

We’ll likely next see the reigning Horse of the Year, Rachel Alexandra, make her next start in 5-weeks at Saratoga.

Rachel Alexandra is set to make her return to Monmouth Park this Saturday in the $400,000 Lady’s Secret Stakes.  This marks the culmination of a courtship between Monmouth and Rachel Alexandra since she dominated the Haskell Invitational here last year as a 3-year old, winning by distant 6-lengths.

Monmouth needed to move the race up one week, distance the race from 1 1/16 to 1 1/8 miles, and increase the traditional $150,000 purse to $400,000.  But, they expect the crowds to come pouring in this Saturday, usually the slowest Saturday of the meet, to witness the reigning Horse of the Year try to continue to right the ship after an abysmal start to the season.

Rachel Alexandra started 2010 off with back to back losses, she triumphed in a powder-puff Fleur de Lis Handicap at Churchill Downs.  This race looks to be slightly tougher, but she’ll still face 6 other fillies that have never won a graded stakes race.

Tune into TwinSpires.com to watch Rachel Alexandra run this Saturday, July 24th.
