Caixa Eletronica is the James Marvin Stakes morning line favorite at 7/2.

By Stephen Andrus exclusively for HorseRacingInside.com…

According to the calendar, summer arrived one month ago. But in the world of horse racing, summer doesn’t arrive in New York until Saratoga race course, also known as ‘The Spa’, opens their gates to the bustling crowds.

This year, summer arrives on Friday, July 22nd, and from the looks of things, the racing action will be even hotter than the temperature.  With 53 stakes races scheduled thus far, each with a purse of at least $75,000 and 35 of them being Graded, the 2011 Saratoga meet looks to be a sure winner.

Want some real proof? Take a look at the opening “feature” race. No, I don’t mean the Schuylerville Stakes, the traditional opening day feature for up and coming 2 year old fillies. I am talking about the James Marvin, an ungraded stakes for 3 year olds and up at 7 furlongs, that has attracted a field that would blow the doors off of most Grade I races at other tracks.

A field of 11 horses have been entered, accumulating a who’s who of top-notch winners. Among them is Aikenite, a multiple Graded stakes winner this year; Ravalo, a two time Graded sprint winner; Gayego, a five time stakes winner, including the Arkansas Derby and the Ancient Title; Here Comes Ben, who won the Grade I Forego here last summer; D’ Funnybone, a five time Grade II winner; Hamazing Destiny, 2nd in the Breeders Cup Sprint last year; and Jersey Town, winner of the Grade I Cigar Mile last year.

There is a reason all of these horses have come to Saratoga to race in a non-graded stakes. It’s called prestige. Winning a stakes race at Saratoga, Graded or otherwise, bestows you with honor and recognition. It puts you on the map. It fuels the people conversation about that horse. It generates a buzz. It means you showed up to race at the premier meet in America, you took on the best, and emerged victorious.

If this opening day race is any indication of what the 2011 Saratoga meet is going to be like, it is going to be one hot Summer at The Spa this year!

Here’s the list of Graded Stakes Earners that have stated they are pointing towards the Kentucky Derby.  This doesn’t include the fillies and D’ Funnybone.

The blue horses below were the winners of the Arkansas Derby and the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes on April 10th.  The Top 20 qualify for the Derby!

Here are the entries for this weekend’s last two Kentucky Derby prep races.  Check out the Graded Earnings list to see who’s on the verge of making or missing the starting gate on May 1st.  Remember, the Top 20 Graded Earners will be allowed to run in the Kentucky Derby.

Arkansas Derby – Oaklawn Park

Noble's Promise, Super Saver, Dublin take on the Arkansas Derby field at Oaklawn Park

Noble’s Promise is a shoe in for the Grand Daddy, currently ranking 3rd in Graded Stakes Earnings with $708,000.  Dublin looks to have previously secured his starting position in the Kentucky Derby, boasting the #17 position with graded earnings at $273,208.  However, Uh Oh Bango (#25), SuperSaver (#29), and Northern Giant (#36) all need a big score in the Arkansas Derby to qualify for the Kentucky Derby on May 1st.

Toyota Blue Grass Stakes – Keeneland

The last major prep for the Kentucky Derby, will the graded earnings list shift significantly?
This will be an interesting race, as it’s likely the last race in which these horses can secure their place in the Kentucky Derby starting gate.  Currently, Interactif is sitting in the #18 spot with $270,450.  The Blue Grass has all sorts of bubble horses, including Aikenite (#22), Make Music For Me (#23), Odysseus (#26), Pleasant Prince (#30), and Paddy O’Prado (#37).  How the Toyota Blue Grass shapes up will have a huge impact on who we see make, and who we see get bumped from, the Kentucky Derby.

Gomez Fined $750; Espinoza Suspended 3-Days

After this year’s eventful Santa Anita Derby, where a barrage of both verbal and physical punches were thrown, Gomez and Espinoza both ended up being punished by the stewards.  After some concern for Gomez fans that he would be taken off Kentucky Derby hopeful Lookin At Lucky, it seems that Bob Baffert has cooled his raged and calmly thought out that it’s probably not the best idea to take off the only rider Lookin At Lucky has had a few weeks before the Kentucky Derby!

“The California Horse Racing Board of stewards held a hearing on the incident Sunday morning before the races. Frank Alvarado, rider of fifth-place finisher Skipshot, was absolved of any wrongdoing; Espinoza received a three-day suspension starting next Sunday; and Gomez was fined $750 for his actions after the race, according to steward Tom Ward.”

Santa Anita Announcer Feels Earthquake; Jockeys Continue To Ride

Santa Anita Park was in the middle of the 7th race when the 7.2 earthquake hit just outside of Mexicali, a Mexico – California border town.  The jockeys claimed not to have felt anything, which isn’t surprising considering they’re bouncing around at 30+ MPH on the back of a horse.

However, Trevor Denman, the track announcer, which makes his calls from the top of the Santa Anita grandstand, didn’t budge much in his racing call.  It wasn’t anything like Vic Stauffer’s call back in June ’05…

Todd Pletcher’s Derby Barn Is Stacked

Pletcher has so many horses aimed for the May 1st Kentucky Derby that it would almost be impossible for him to not sneak one through to the winner’s circle.  Here’s the list I’m looking at:

Rule – Sam F. Davis Stakes winner
Super Saver - Kentucky Jockey Club winner; Fountain of Youth show
Interactif – BC Juvy Tuf show; San Felipe Stakes place
Aikenite – Fountain of Youth show
Discreetly Mine – Risen Star winner
